Melvin Gordon has a lot to prove entering his third season in the NFL. The increase in his production between his rookie and sophomore seasons is enigmatic. In his rookie year, Gordon rushed 184 times for 641 yards, and 0 touchdowns. His 3.5 yards per rush ranked 46th in the league and Gordon looked like a bust.

Last year, Gordon exploded for 997 yards on 254 attempts in only 13 games. He ran for 10 touchdowns and caught 2 more, and he upped his yards per carry to 3.9 (28th in the league). He missed the final three games of the season but was selected to the Pro Bowl for his performance.

New head coach Anthony Lynn is coming to LA from Buffalo, where he was the offensive coordinator for a Bills team who led the NFL in yards per carry and rushing touchdowns last season. According to RB Branden Oliver, Lynn is switching the team to a zone run scheme, a simpler scheme which may benefit both the line and the backs. Lynn’s arrival in LA is an interesting variable as we enter year three of the tale of Dr. Melvin and Mr. Gordon.

So who is the real Melvin Gordon? The only constant between ’15 and ’16 is he had a knee injury in both years. His 12 total touchdowns are not going to be easy to replicate this season, but I actually think the Gordon we saw last year is the authentic product. Expect 250 rushes for 1,000 yards, and 10 total touchdowns from Gordon in 2017.
