Kiko Alonso’s still young career has seen its share of ups and downs. Now entering only his fifth season, Alonso has played for Buffalo, Philadelphia, and now Miami. His recent four year extension with the Dolphins will hopefully keep him in place for a while, and allow him to thrive.
Alonso’s rookie season was excellent despite being on a 6-10 Bills team. He was named Defensive Rookie of the Year after an 87 tackle, 4 interception 2013 campaign; highlighted by a 22 tackle (9 solo, 13 assist) performance against Cincinnati in week six.
Unfortunately, Alonso tore his ACL prior to the 2014 season and missed the entire year. He was then traded to the Eagles in exchange for LeSean McCoy, and was made to suffer through a miserable season with Chip Kelly in Philly. In March, 2016, Alonso and teammate Byron Maxwell were traded to the Dolphins, as part of a deal in which the teams traded first round picks. The Dolphins would use that pick to select OT Laremy Tunsil, while the Eagles traded up to take Carson Wentz.
Alonso had a solid 2016 season in Miami with 69 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 4 fumble recoveries. He also started 15 games, returning to good health and a high quality of play for the first time since 2013.
With the additions of Lawrence Timmons and Raekwon McMillan, it looks like Alonso will be moving from inside to weak side linebacker. How this will affect him, is uncertain, but 70+ tackles and a few interceptions seems likely for Alonso in 2017.
