Daniel Sorensen isn’t a very well-known name across the NFL, but he made his mark as a role player for the Chiefs in 2016. Primarily a special teams player during his first two seasons, Sorensen stepped into the role of third safety last season, and outperformed expectations.
Sorensen tallied 63 tackles on the year, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 interceptions; including a 48 yard pick six off of Drew Brees in week 7. His play warranted a contract extension from Kansas City, worth $4 million per year over four seasons.
Sorensen is still a backup heading into 2017, as neither Eric Berry nor Ron Parker, signed through 2022 and 2019 respectively, are going anywhere. It will be interesting to see if Sorensen continues to improve as a defender, since there is always need for quality DBs in nickel, dime, and quarter packages. Odds are Sorensen continues to be a playmaker. Look for 75 tackles and 3 interceptions out of him this season.
