After spending the first five years of his career as a spot starter and backup to Sebastian Vollmer, Marcus Cannon exploded onto the scene last year as one of the best right tackles in football. Cannon found himself the permanent starter in 2016 after Vollmer’s career was cut short by shoulder and hip injuries, and rose to the occasion in impressive fashion.
Out of nowhere, Cannon had a breakout season, ranking among the elite offensive tackles in run blocking, leading the way for an 18 touchdown season from LeGarrette Blount. His pass blocking skills were also exceptional, most notably when the right tackle shut down Von Miller in week 15, removing the elite defender’s pass rush from the equation, and holding him to only five tackles on the day.
The return of longtime offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia last season no doubt had an impact on the Patriots’ line, as Cannon, Shaq Mason, and Nate Solder all had excellent seasons after poor play in 2014 and 2015. The Patriots line looks strong entering 2017, and we all know what happens when Tom Brady has time to sit back in the pocket…
