Ali Marpet came out of nowhere in the 2015 NFL Draft. No, I mean he seriously came out of nowhere. Hobart College is a Division III school in Geneva, New York where Marpet was a three-time First-team All-Liberty League player from 2012 – 2014.
He may have not been recruited to a major school, but the NCAA took notice after his senior season, as he became just the second Division III player (Chris Warren in 1990) to ever be selected to the Senior Bowl.
Marpet’s performance at the Senior Bowl and subsequent combine performance, where he impressed with his speed and agility, launched him to become a 2nd round pick for the Bucs. He started 13 games as a rookie, and started all 16 in 2016, leading an otherwise struggling Tampa line in both pass blocking and run blocking.
The Buccaneers have expressed interest in trying out Marpet at Center this season, which may prove to be worthwhile considering his small size for a guard. He should continue to improve as a blocker, but will need help from those around him for the Bucs offense to take the next step.
