Lawrence Timmons is our first non-lineman on the countdown, and rightfully so. A pass rusher turned coverage linebacker, Timmons has a great eye for the ball carrier, and possesses a rare combination of speed and tackling ability which allows him to consistently lead his team in tackles. Timmons was a core member of what has always been a Steelers linebacking corps loaded with talent since the mid-2000s. Drafted as an outside linebacker in 2007, he performed in a backup role to James Harrison, before moving to inside linebacker in 2009. In the following eight seasons, Timmons started 124 games, compiling over 900 total tackles, 30.5 sacks, 11 interceptions, and 12 forced fumbles.

As an unrestricted free agent following the 2016 season, Timmons signed on with the Miami Dolphins. If he stays at middle linebacker, Timmons will likely see situational play and fill more of a depth role behind Kiko Alonso, but is also excellent insurance should the oft injured Alonso go down again in 2017. It’s possible Timmons may return to outside linebacker in the Dolphins’ 4-3 system, however Miami has made no distinction on what his role will be. Either way, the veteran will be a welcome addition to an already talented Dolphin defense, and will make his impact felt.
